Tämä sivusto luotiin, jotta voisimme kerätä ja jakaa tietoa teknisestä harrastustoiminnasta, joka jatkuu vielä entisen DECUS Finland -yhdistyksen jälkeen. Vaikka virallinen yhdistys onkin jo lopetettu aikaa sitten, on teknistä harrastajajoukkoa silti vielä olemassa ja se tarvitsee tällaisen kontaktipisteen.

Tämä sivusto ei korvaa, mutta toimii läheisessä yhteistyössä exdecfinland.org:in kanssa, joka keskittyy enemmänkin mukaviin sosiaalisiin tapaamisiin ja yleisiin tapahtumiin, jotka liittyvät entisen Digital Equipment Corporation Oy:n työntekijöihin.

Mahdollisesti suurin tarve harrastajilla viimeaikoina on ollut OpenVMS Hobbyist -lisenssien hankkiminen Montagar:sta. Tämä ei ole mahdollista ellei kuulu jonkin maan DECUS-yhdistykseen. Tämähän on tietenkin ollut mahdotonta Suomessa, koska DECUS Finland -yhdistys lopetettiin. Jo aiemmin saadut DECUS ID -numerot toimivat kuitenkin vieläkin.Vanha DECUS Finland -yhdistyksen jäsentietokantakin saatiin 99 prosenttisesti pelastettua, jotta voimme antaa DECUS ID -numeroita niille, jotka ovat oman numeronsa hukanneet tai unohtaneet. Myös uusien "jäsenien" rekisteröinti on mahdollista uuden DECUS ID:n saamiseksi, jotta lisenssien haku olisi mahdollista. Emme kuitenkaan ole enää rekisteröity yhdistys, vaan tätä pyörittää vain pieni joukko asian harrastajia (tällä hetkellä lähinnä OpenVMS-harrastajia). OpenVMS Hobbyist -sivulta löydät tietoa rekisteröitymisestä, rekisterin käytöstä ja sisällöstä (rekisteriseloste). Sieltä löytyy myös muuta harrastukseen liityvää asiaa.

Lisäksi kunnioitamme John Wisniewskin muistoa. Hän oli yksi niistä alkuperäisistä puhemiehistä, jotka vakuuttivat DEC/Compaq/HP:n aloittamaan OpenVMS Hobbyist -ohjelman. Yritämme pitää tämän tradition elossa myös Suomessa.

Tämä sivusto ei kuitenkaan rajoitu pelkästään OpenVMS-käyttöjärjestelmän pariin, vaan muutkin DECUS-konseptin mukaiset harrastustoiminnat (Tru64, VAX, Alpha jne.) ovat toki tervetulleita. Otamme ehdotuksia tai tekstiä vastaan ja keskustelemme mielellämme lisäsisällöstä.

Haluamme myös helpottaa harrastamista ja tukea sen laajenemista ja autamme mielellämme uusia harrastajia asian tiimoilta.

This site has been created for a need to collect and share information about the remaining technical hobbyist activities of the former DECUS Finland Society. The official society has been long discontinued, but the technical hobbyists are still continuing their hobbies and need a point of contact and information.

Note that this site is not a replacement for, but is in close co-operation with the exdecfinland.org, which is more concentrated on the much appreciated social meetings and general events of the former Digital Equipment Corporation Oy employees.

Perhaps lately the main requirement for the technical hobbyists has been the need to obtain hobbyist licenses for OpenVMS platforms from Montagar. This is impossible without being a member of one of the country specific DECUS Chapters. This, of course, has been quite impossible in Finland, because the official DECUS Finland chapter was discontinued. The previusly obtained DECUS IDs do still work of course. Also the old DECUS Finland member database was actually salvaged (99% of it) in order to be able to provide the DECUS IDs for those who have forgotten or displaced their ID number. New "members" can also be registered in order to receive a new DECUS Finland ID to enable fetching the Licenses. Please note that this is not an official organization, but is just driven by a small group of hobbyists (currently OpenVMS hobbyists). There is also other stuff that relates to the OpenVMS Hobbyism.

In addition we honor the memory of John Wisniewski. John was one of the original rabble-rousers who convinced DEC/Compaq/HP to start the Hobbyist program. We will try to keep this tradition alive also in Finland.

This site is not restricted to OpenVMS matters only. Instead we also welcome other hobbies that relate to the DECUS concept (Tru64, VAX, Alpha etc.). We are open for suggestions or written text and gladly discuss about additional content.

We also want to ease the hobby, and support its expansion and we gladly help new hobbyists around the subject.
